Wall St Week Ahead: The market is oversold, but major signs say “sell”

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Normally a big decline would set up Wall Street for a technical rebound. But that may not be the case next week, even after the market posted its worst weekly loss for the year and the S&P fell for six straight sessions.

With the corporate earnings season drawing to an end and recent U.S. economic data raising doubts about the pace of growth, the S&P 500, which is down 7.3 percent so far in May, could decline further next week as concerns about the financial health of Europe persist.

“What has changed in the world since April? We went from hearing a constant refrain that the world is awash in money and markets must go higher to hearing nobody wants to take any risk. … All in a week,” said Peter Cecchini, global head of institutional equity derivatives at Cantor Fitzgerald & Co in New York.

The S&P 500 fell 4.3 percent for the week, its steepest weekly decline this year, and closed below 1,300 for the first time in four months.

The hotly awaited market debut of Facebook on Friday was marred by technology glitches on the Nasdaq in sending messages back to the brokerages that handled orders of Facebook Inc for individual, or “retail,” investors. Those problems rekindled fears about the market’s electronic trading system and caused some investors to stay away from equities.

Weighing on sentiment is a growing sense among investors that the euro zone debt crisis is nearing new heights, fueled by fears of the potential for a Greek euro exit and the deteriorating health of the Spanish banking system.

Solid corporate earnings and upbeat U.S. economic indicators had fueled the rally in U.S. stocks, offsetting jitters over Europe. But with earnings almost out of the way and data starting to disappoint, investors have shifted their focus back to headlines out of Europe.

Leaders of the Group of 8 major industrial economies meet this weekend to try to tackle the financial crisis in Europe. U.S. President Barack Obama, the G8 host, has urged European leaders repeatedly to do more to stimulate growth, fearing contagion from the euro crisis that could hurt the U.S. economy and his chances of re-election in November.

“The market is extremely oversold. Nonetheless, all major indicators remain on sell signals,” said Larry McMillan, president of options research firm McMillan Analysis Corp, in a report on Friday.

“We expect a powerful but short-lived rally should be coming soon. But at this point, barring some major shifts in our indicators, it may only be a rally in a larger down-trending market,” McMillian said.

THE FACEBOOK EFFECT

Facebook, the No. 1 online social network, disappointed investors with a tepid market debut on Friday. Shares rose a scant 0.6 percent – nowhere near expectations for double-digit gains on the first trading day – and the day was marred by technical problems due to huge order volume. The stock closed at $ 38.23 after falling as low as $ 38, its initial offer price.

The disappointing debut curbed investors’ appetite for other social media stocks. Hardest hit was Zynga Inc , which closed down 13.4 percent to $ 7.16 after falling as low as $ 6.40. The stock was temporarily halted twice due to sudden declines.

LinkedIn shares fell 5.7 percent to $ 99.02, and Groupon fell 6.7 percent to $ 11.58. Zynga and Groupon, both of which went public late last year, are also trading below their IPO prices.

Despite the disappointing market debut and the weak performance of social media stocks, market participants are still optimistic about Facebook going forward.

“In any brand new area, social media in this case, most are going to be losers and only some are going to be winners. Yes, the IPO was disappointing, but Facebook is clearly the winner here and others aren’t,” said Randy Warren, chief investment strategist at Warren Financial Service.

Next week’s economic data includes April’s existing home sales on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Existing home sales are forecast at a 4.60 million-unit annual, up from 4.48 million in March.

New homes sales figures are due on Wednesday at 10 a.m. April’s new home sales are also expected to post an increase, gaining about 7,000 units over a 328,000-unit annual rate in March.

Initial jobless claims and durable goods orders will be published on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. Consumer sentiment is due at 9:55 a.m. on Friday.

For the week, the Dow is off 3.5 percent and the Nasdaq is down 5.3 percent.

How to Dispose of Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors are those gadgets which never get any attention unless … well, we’re all aware of the exact moments when they make their otherwise oblivious presence felt with their characteristic beeps. Funnily enough, when asked about our favorite inventions, we never think twice about naming our cell phones, tabs or computers, and remain blissfully unmindful of the one little thing that is undoubtedly the most useful.

Reportedly, around two-thirds of the deaths resulting from household fires have occurred in homes without a working smoke alarm; so, one can never underestimate the importance of a functional smoke detector. Smoke detectors may be doing the priceless job of alerting us when there’s a fire at home; but, seriously, how many of us pay attention to maintaining it or even checking it? Besides the annual or biannual battery change ritual, not many are aware that we need to replace our smoke detectors every eight to ten years. And, when it is time to replace them, we can’t just throw the old ones into the trash as they contain hazardous material.

Smoke alarms usually come in two variations, ionization and photoelectric, each being differently capable of detecting smoke. These days, we have alarms with dual sensors that incorporate both technologies to maximize the effectiveness. Smoke detectors mostly contain alkaline or lithium batteries and electronic circuit boards, which need to be recycled appropriately, whereas ionization alarms contain traces of the radioactive element, Americium-241. What it does is that it releases particles that are instrumental in detecting smoke in the area. It is present in a compartment within the plastic casing, so it can cause no harm when it is installed in homes; however, safety measures must be followed while disposing it. Disposal of smoke detectors should be done carefully to prevent radioactive material from polluting our landfills.

Household Smoke Detectors: Points to Remember

»

According to the Fire Protection Agency rules, smoke detectors are potential health hazards if they are not disposed off carefully.

»

By law, manufacturing companies are supposed to label their products with warnings regarding their hazardous nature due to the presence of radioactive material. This is to make users aware that they should be disposed only at a nuclear waste disposal center.

»

Another option is to return the device to the manufacturer, who would then responsibly recycle or dispose it. Extreme caution should be taken while returning a smoke alarm to the manufacturer.

»

While returning it, do not open the device or fidget with its components. Wrap it in paper or bubble wrap, place it in a box and seal it before dispatching.

»

In case the unit cannot be returned to the manufacturer, you can give it to a Household Waste Facility in your town.

»

State laws regarding disposal of smoke alarms vary, so update yourself about the rules in yours.

Disposing Smoke Detectors With Radioactive Material

»

The first step is to take the smoke detector apart as different components need to be disposed separately. Ensure that you are wearing protective rubber gloves before you begin.

»

You must remove the batteries from the device and recycle them as per your regional laws.

»

The plastic casing needs to be removed now. You can recycle this as regular plastic.

»

The remaining contents should be wrapped and then sealed into a box. Never try to compress the unit or crush it.

»

Make sure to return it by UPS ground mail only. You are strictly recommended against sending it by airmail.

For some, this entire exercise may seem like a troublesome chore, but you must remember that it needs to be done after long intervals. The humble old smoke detector is the appliance that works nonstop to ensure that our homes remain protected from being ravaged in fires. Maintaining a device that does so much for our well-being shouldn’t require a lot of encouragement, should it?

Japan’s economy grows 4.1 percent amid recovery

TOKYO (AP) — Japan‘s economy grew an at annual rate of 4.1 percent in the first quarter amid a gradual recovery from last year’s catastrophic earthquake and tsunami.

The Cabinet Office said Thursday that the preliminary growth figures showed that a rebound in consumer spending was lifting the world’s third-biggest economy.

After the March 11 disaster last year, many Japanese were in mourning and stayed away from stores, theaters and pubs. That compounded the damage from disruptions to manufacturing in northeastern Japan, where many auto and electronics plants ground to a halt, and other parts of the country.

The latest data showed that private consumption grew at an annual rate of 4.4 percent. Consumer spending makes up more than half of Japan’s economy.

“The numbers show a solid Japanese economic recovery,” said Satoshi Osanai, economist at Daiwa Institute of Research in Tokyo.

Consumer spending got a significant lift from government subsidies for green vehicles that sent buyers to dealerships for hybrids and other fuel-efficient models.

But prospects remained uncertain for the current quarter because of fears about the European economy and other factors that could crimp expansion.

“Economic growth is likely to slow down and could head into a contraction,” said Osanai.

Also robust was public investment at 23.6 percent, reflecting reconstruction spending on housing and other building work in the devastated northeastern region.

Japan’s economy grew 1.0 percent in the quarter ended March from the October-December 2011 quarter. That was better than the 0.7 percent projected by analysts in Japan, and translates to a 4.1 percent expansion in annualized terms.

The latest growth marks a third straight quarter of growth, although still at fragile rates. The economy was virtually flat October-December but did not shrink.

Corporate spending was weak during the January-March period, shrinking 3.9 percent from the previous quarter, or an annualized rate of 14.8 percent.

Ron Paul to Stop Campaigning in States Yet to Vote

Ron Paul’s bid for the GOP presidential nomination has entered a new, scaled back phase that may signal the practical end of his campaign. In a letter to his supporters, Paul explained the position of his campaign moving forward: “Our campaign will continue to work in the state convention process. We will continue to take leadership positions, win delegates, and carry a strong message to the Republican National Convention that Liberty is the way of the future. Moving forward, however, we will no longer spend resources campaigning in primaries in states that have not yet voted. Doing so with any hope of success would take many tens of millions of dollars we simply do not have.”

The letter is entirely consistent with Paul’s larger message of fiscal responsibility. Rather than continuing to spend the campaign funds provided by his supporters on contests that he doesn’t deem winnable, Paul is choosing to focus on continuing his campaign without the massive overhead of direct campaign spending. The chances of Paul actually winning the GOP nomination are as remote now as they were a few months ago.

The reality is that the GOP nomination is going to Mitt Romney and the Vice Presidential running mate that he selects. Paul’s role at this point will be to force an acknowledgement of his message by the GOP establishment, and perhaps from the Romney campaign as it tries to mount a challenge to President Barack Obama’s bid for re-election.

Ironically, it will probably not be until after the upcoming election that people start to understand exactly what Ron Paul was trying to tell them for the better part of the last year. By then it won’t really matter, of course, but Paul’s message may be even more important in 2013 than it is in 2012.

Kids Don’t Have to Ruin Your Marriage

If you are one of those people who grew up not sure if you’d ever want kids, and now you find yourself married to the perfect spouse and thinking children might be in your not-so-distant future, you are not alone. If you are worried that having these kids will ruin your marriage, you are not alone, either. While it will take some work, and while it will certainly change your life, having a baby doesn’t have to ruin your marriage. You just have to get a little creative about how you think of spending time together, and you have to make the most of the time you have.

After Bedtime

Remember when you were a little kid and you used to complain about having to go to bed earlier than all of the adults? There was a reason your mom and dad made you go to sleep earlier than they did. They use the after-bedtime hours as adult time. This is the time for moms and dads to watch what they want on television, or to watch a movie not suitable for children. You might be exhausted when you put your kids to sleep, but enforcing a strict bedtime is good for the child and the parents. It gives the child a sense of routine, and a good night’s sleep, while it gives the parents some quality time together in the comfort of their own home.

Hire a Babysitter

Some parents may be wary of hiring a babysitter who is not a family member, but sometimes it is necessary if you ever want to get out of the house with just the two of you. Find someone you trust by asking a trusted neighbor or by consulting online babysitting and nanny searches. These internet babysitting profiles often run background checks and allow you to interview people before hiring them, which can put your mind at ease. Hiring a babysitter can really add up, though, from a cost standpoint. If hiring a babysitter is too expensive, see if you can trade off nights with the parents of your child’s friends. You take all the kids for a night one week, and then the next week, the other parents take their turn. This can be beneficial for everyone involved, because it allows you to spend less money while still being able to have someone you trust watch your kids, and your kids get to play with their friends every week.

Schedule Date Night

Those mommy calendars are no joke. When you have little kids running around, you need to schedule every minute of every day. Before kids, you probably had spontaneous date nights all of the time, but after kids, this can be much harder than it used to be. There is no shame in scheduling a date night. Put it on the calendar, and make sure everyone knows that you and your spouse are going out of town for a night, or maybe just dinner. It doesn’t matter what you do; what matters is that you do it alone.

Family Cuddle Time

While it’s definitely not the same as spending time alone, having quality family time every night is important for everyone. When you spend time with your kids, talking to them and sharing stories about your days and being excited about each others projects, this can foster a sense of companionship among the family. Even if you don’t feel like talking one day, pick a favorite movie or television show and cuddle up each other with a great blanket. You’ll feel great having spent quality time together with your family.

Romney Apologizes for High School Bullying

Likely GOP Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney was forced to address a Washington Post article in which many of Romney’s prep school classmates recalled some of his pranks and more troubling behavior during his high school years. Apparently, the buttoned-up Mitt Romney that we see today was much more of a wild child in the early 1960s, and some of his classmates still have the scars to show for it. Among some of the more cruel “pranks” perpetrated by Romney, he reportedly held down a student with several other boys and cut his hair because they believed that the student was a homosexual. As it turns out, he was a homosexual and the incident troubled him throughout his life.

Romney denies any recollection of the incident and also pointed out that, in the early 60s, he was oblivious to anyone’s sexual orientation or the possibility that any of his classmates might be homosexual. In fairness to Romney, that is probably a much more accurate statement than trying to claim that he doesn’t remember specific incidents from high school. Anyone who has ever been to high school – and certainly anyone who enjoyed the level of popularity and influence that Romney seemed to hold during his days at an elite prep school – is very likely to remember most of the important details of the experience.

Many of Romney’s classmates acknowledged that he was humorous and could frequently evoke a laugh, even if it was often at the expense of others. And even those who found Romney to be mean-spirited and somewhat of a bully acknowledged that his demeanor began to change when he met his current wife, Ann, who attended the sister school nearby.

Ultimately, the high school stories are probably going to fade away – as they should. Trying to dissect events of 50 years ago isn’t going to create a discernable advantage for either party, but these are the kinds of stories that will be thrown about in the calm before the election storm, which will get into full swing later in the summer.

Ode to a Stamp

I have a stamp in my hand.
Forever Yours, please understand.
You’re patriotic.
Your image is a flag.
Too bad I grabbed you from my bag.
Now I’m placing you on my letter.
Don’t worry, life will soon be better.
Alas, you’re going to go away.
To a better home, I hope and pray.
But once the letter is opened, much to my dismay,
The envelope and you shall be thrown away.
Oh by the way,
Have a nice day!

How We Live on a Single Mom’s Budget

I was once married and had no concerns when it came to spending money. My husband made it and I was free to spend it however I chose as long as the bills were paid. Flash forward a few years, I am now single and the income is not there, however by careful budgeting I am able to stay somewhat accustomed to the life I had previously known. These are the main areas that I found I could make changes in to help keep me on track

Clothing
I have a growing boy and I also like to look fashionable. This is one of the areas that I knew I would have to budget for as my son will always have a need for clothes. I discovered a local consignment shop that would allow you to bring in your items and exchange them for cash or in store credit. This is a huge savings to me as almost all of our clothing purchases are now done here. This works out really well, as he outgrows clothing the clothes go back to the store and a credit is given for new items. I always get a sense of helping others when using this approach because the cost is kept down for others on a budget and I am using a small business. My suggestion to making this work is to purchase clothing sometimes a size bigger when there is a great sale going on to maximize savings. Also get to know the store owner and find out what items they look for and let them know what you are most interested in. You may find he or she will make you aware of specials that they will be starting before they tell anyone else.

Utilities
I found that my utility company offered budget billing and that my bill would be the same each month based on my actually usage of power. Every 3 months they evaluate my usage and it can increase or decrease the price that I pay. I have found that I save around $ 1000.00 by using this service. Knowing how much I will be paying makes things much simpler and I allow myself a extra cushion just in case the rates should increase.

I also got rid of my cable service. I have several gaming systems in the house that are compatible with Netflix and found that I could still enjoy my favorite shows at a fraction of the price by enrolling in Netflix. I shopped around to find the cheapest wireless internet provider as that is one of the requirements for having the services and in the process was able to save money on that utility as well.

My cell phone proved to be the change that added additional funds to the entertainment budget. I went from having a smart phone with a nationwide carrier to having a smartphone on a prepaid plan. I now have unlimited talk, text and internet for 1/4th of the price I was paying my carrier. The downside was that I had to purchase the phone at full price but after 3 months, I was seeing the savings.

When I look at how much money I have saved by making slight changes, I get eager to try more things to help keep my family afloat during a down economy.

U.S. Refuses to Negotiate with Al Qaeda for Hostage Release

Top U.S. officials reiterated the American position of refusing to negotiate with al Qaeda in hostage situations. White House spokesman Jay Carney said that authorities were still trying to coordinate Weinstein’s release, but provided no details as to what efforts were in place. The video, which shows Weinstein being held against a white backdrop, was directed at U.S. President Barack Obama and Weinstein recites what sound like prepared remarks asking for the president to step in and give his captors what they want in return for his freedom.

It is believed that the al Qaeda group holding Weinstein wants the release of specific prisoners in exchange for releasing Weinstein. Weinstein has been held by al Qaeda since August, when he was kidnapped from the Pakistani city of Lahore. He was living there as an advisor and consultant for J.E. Austin Associates, a U.S. firm that works with various Pakistani government agencies and private corporations.

Although the video showed Weinstein in what appeared to be reasonable health, it’s unclear exactly when the video was shot. He does note in the video that he has been given his required medication and that he has been cared for by his captors. The only realistic option on the table from the U.S. perspective is to try to establish back-channel communications with the al Qaeda cell holding Weinstein and to try to quietly negotiate his release via alternative means. A rescue attempt would seem unlikely, unless Weinstein’s location is determined to be outside of Pakistan.
